HEALTHY GUT = HAPPY LIFE!
Your gut health is dependent on the health of the trillions of live microbes that live inside you which are crucial for digestion, immune function and weight regulation.
Your gut health is so important as it influences the collection of living organisms inside your gut, which is called your microbiome – it is as unique as your fingerprint. Also known as your gut flora, the strains of microbes that live in your gut are heavily influenced by your dietary choices and your consumption of live culture products. Your microbiome is an organ that you can influence!
Good gut bugs ferment fibre into a short chain fatty acid called butyrate. Studies have found that butyrate has a potential role in your gut health, as it reduces inflammation inside the gut.
When butyrate levels are low, your gut is open to inflammation. Inflammatory bowel diseases (including Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, and others) are a group of disorders which affect the intestines. These often painful conditions leave sufferers with vomiting, diarrhoea, and anaemia (low iron).
Inflammatory gut conditions appear to be affected by interactions between microbes and the cells that line your intestine. ‘Good bugs’ produce mucous that protects the gut lining, while ‘bad bugs’ irritate the intestine, loosen the connections between cells, and allow large molecules to leak through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
These good bugs and bad bugs inside your gut also affect your weight. Obese people and slim people have different types of bacteria living in their gut. When obese people lose weight, their microbiota changes. A diet high in fat, sugar, and simple carbs is bad for the good bugs which help keep us slim, while it encourages the growth of bad bugs which can make us obese.
To improve your gut health, we recommend drinking kefir daily along with following an anti-inflammatory diet. Kefir contains significant levels of vitamin A which contributes to the normal function of the immune system, as well as significant levels of calcium, which contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes.
